People living with HIV bear a substantially increased burden of mental health challenges compared with people without HIV. Beyond its impact on quality of life, diminished mental health is associated with reduced access and adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART), higher viral load, and, consequently, potentially increased likelihood of onward transmission and advanced HIV disease.1 Better understanding and management of psychiatric conditions among people living with HIV is therefore key in meeting UNAIDS goals of reducing HIV transmission and advanced HIV disease-related mortality by 2030.
