“Think about that for a second—in one of the richest countries on Earth, the most common thing that parents are asking for is a safe bed for their baby”, explained paediatrician Dr Guddi Singh during the first episode of Three Ages of Child, her three-part series broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in the UK. Exploring children's early years, school years, and adolescence, her series examined the underlying causes of the childhood illnesses she sees in her clinic. Singh began in Hartlepool, the town in northeast England where she grew up, with a visit to a Baby Bank, which not only provides families with essential items—such as the clothes, nappies, and beds requested by parents—but also a space for conversations to help tackle loneliness.
