

We thank Keran Sun and colleagues for their insights and the opportunity to clarify some important features of our study. Recognising the distinction between our Article,1 which is an observational laboratory study describing encephalitic cases of Murray Valley encephalitis virus (MVEV) infection, and the existing proactive surveillance and response activities for MVEV and other flavivirus threats in Australia, which have been described elsewhere,2–4 is essential to the interpretation of the findings of our paper.
