Although progress against cardiovascular disease—the leading cause of death globally—has extended life expectancy, the rise of diabetes has begun to erode these gains.1 As with any public health issue, surveillance is crucial to understanding the contours of the diabetes epidemic to help mitigate its toll through global, national, and local action. For the past 25 years, the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has surveilled the magnitude of the diabetes burden, including which populations bear the greatest load, where it concentrates, and how trends are shifting.
